PROLOGUE TO GLASSBLOWING
The key element in glassblowing is improvisation.
Working with the burning glass is like working in a perpetual motion in human scale. In a constant motion with the melted piece with your hands. Staying calm while feeling confident with the rhythm. Every step counts. A missed step equals the melted glass beginning to reshape itself - then you’ll improvise. With time, the operation becomes fluent, close to a meditation. You’ll roll, sculpt, heat, blow. And repeat.
Sculpting glass is like creating architecture in a miniature scale. It is about creating spaces.
In the process, you can feel the glass inhabiting the empty space, mimicking the shape of the wooden mold. Escaping the center, extending into its corners, building its walls in glass. By sculpting the glass you can feel the piece grow, twist and turn. That’s when you become the protagonist of your own work.
Glassblowing is a rare skill, yet an integral part of Finland’s cultural heritage. The first artisans’ workshops date back to the 17th century. Approaching glassblowing from an architectural point of view unifies the two art forms while creating long-lasting art work and cultural continuity.
